When to replace

When to Replace Your Heating System

A heating problem doesn't automatically mean you need new equipment. Replacement may be worth considering when any of these apply.

If you're not sure, we'll evaluate the system and compare repair with replacement. Learn more about Heating Repair.

  • Repairs are becoming frequent or hard to justify
  • A major component, like the compressor, has failed
  • Replacement parts are getting hard to find
  • The system runs constantly without keeping the property comfortable
  • Your current equipment no longer fits your comfort needs

Matched equipment

Matched Equipment: Heat Pumps, Air Handlers & Electric Heat

A heat pump is one part of a system. The outdoor unit, the indoor air handler, the electric heat kit, and the thermostat all need to be matched to work together correctly. Most heat pumps in Northeast Florida include electric auxiliary heat strips inside the air handler. They supplement the heat pump on colder days and during defrost cycles. The heat kit is sized to the home and the electrical service, so it's part of the equipment selection, not an afterthought. When we recommend a system, we look at:

The heat pump's capacity

Heating and cooling capacity for your property, not just one season.

A compatible air handler

Matched to the outdoor unit so the pair performs as designed.

The right electric heat kit

Sized to your home and your electrical service.

A thermostat that controls both

The heat pump and the auxiliary heat, correctly.

Whole system or one part?

Should You Replace the Whole System or One Part?

Sometimes only one piece needs replacing. But a heat pump and air handler work as a matched pair, so putting a new outdoor unit on an old, mismatched air handler can limit performance and affect warranty coverage.

  2. 02Condition of the air handler
  3. 03Compatibility with new equipment
  4. 04Warranty coverage
  5. 05Performance you're getting now

We'll look at the age and condition of every component and tell you whether replacing one part or the full system makes more sense.

New equipment may include an applicable manufacturer warranty. Coverage varies by manufacturer, model, registration requirements, and installation details, and many manufacturers require the equipment to be registered within a set time after installation. A manufacturer warranty typically covers parts. Labor is separate, which is what the optional Protection Plan is designed to address. What type of heating system is best for Jacksonville?

For most Jacksonville homes, a heat pump. It provides both heating and cooling from one system, which fits Northeast Florida's long cooling season and short winters.

Can I replace just my heat pump and keep my air handler?

Sometimes. It depends on the age and compatibility of the air handler. A mismatched pair can limit performance and warranty coverage, so we'll check before recommending it.

Does my new system need to be the same size as my old one?

Not necessarily. Your home may have changed since the original system was installed. We size new equipment to the home's current heating and cooling needs.

What's the difference between a manufacturer warranty and the Protection Plan?

A manufacturer warranty generally covers parts, subject to the manufacturer's terms and registration. The optional Mighty Air Protection Plan provides qualifying labor coverage under its own terms.

How long does heating system replacement take?

It depends on the equipment, the property, and the scope of the project. We'll give you a timeline after evaluating your installation.
